About
No Experience
When I began writing for the Internet in early 1997, I had no substantial real-world advertising experience. Before coming to RPA I wrote for small shops, but soon realized just how little I knew about the field of Internet advertising. Because of this, my approach was different. Most writers at that time were trying to escape the old agency ways, but I embraced and adapted them. It was the only way to learn.
No Leadership
A decade ago, there was no one leading the charge, writing books or guiding new internet writers to the field. So I chose to read whatever I could. Most books focused on print, direct, TV and collateral, so I learned traditional advertising techniques and applied them to the Web.
No Kidding
Today, I am an associate creative director with an award-winning background in social media. Some days I am writing “print ads” for the Internet, some days it is a “direct” approach. And then there are the rich media projects that combine the elements of everything, including television.
So what have I learned? To write successfully for the Internet, you must first be able to write successfully.
But hey, you already knew that, right?
